I have been searching and changing my eating habits. Half of my family members have been diagnosed with diabetes making me more conscious of what I am eating. Watching my carbohydrate and fibre intake daily are two factors that I am focusing on while using caloriecount.about.com, which tells me to either increase or decrease my amounts.

Typically, I was eating too many carbohydrates, eating meals with rice, roti and lentils as I have an Indian husband. I am now choosing to eat more non starchy vegetables and low sugar fruits while cutting back on bread, rice and noodles. These are higher in both fiber and nutrients and help to lower my blood sugar levels too.

Making smoothies makes it easier for me to get in more green veggies, fruits and nuts. My fibre intake has increased and I am supplementing with psyllium husks while drinking more water. At the age of 55, I know that it is up to me to make healthier choices to improve my physical well-being. If I don’t take the time to take care of my health now, I will be sabotaging my future unable to do the things I want for myself and those I love. It’s up to me if it is going to be.
